On being oracular

One sometimes becomes one's own Cassandra - that is, making pronouncements or hearing some comments, not paying heed to it, and then having that sense of déja vù when things, seemingly inevitably, happen.

Sam and I were talking earlier today (make that yesterday, although that's only because this is the second time I'm typing this entry - more about that later*) about Murphy's Law as applied to umbrellas and rain. Naturally, I did not carry an umbrella with me. Naturally, later that day it started raining. Thankfully not torrential enough to stop me making my bowling rendez-vous, although it did mean I was waiting on the wrong side of the road (shop awnings make great shelters. Note to Bloomington city officials (or IU, or Bloomington Transit): why does the bus stop in front of Sample Gates not have a rain shelter?).

Joey then mentioned that he lost his favourite hat, and for some reason, despite hearing that (or because of it, if the spell of bad luck continues) I then proceeded to leave my hat behind. That, after making sure that I didn't forget my watch too! Perhaps Mr. Cerebrum is not able to keep track of two things at once. Argh. I did call the bowling alley and confirmed that they had found my hat, so now it's just a matter of getting a ride there..

And to connect the dots (funny, I was about to write connect the knots (which leads to tying the knot, which was probably conjured by the thought of bowling shoes, added with the bowling lore Christine told of Pin #5... ah, material for Q700 tomorrow. So this entry has suddenly acquired academic content!), there is the question of whether Dr. Hofstadter's Copycat conversation earlier today at the Runcible Spoon has anything to do with my copycat hat loss.

Pretty fun day overall. Bowling's fun, first time I break the century since, what, 2003 at that company bowling outing, and, to boot, I potentially have a research adviser!

* Linux, or rather, the ATi proprietary binary driver, decided to start fuzzing the screen and locking the machine up hard just as I was to press Submit earlier on. So I must have purged myself of all my coincidental bad lucks for the next month or so, right? ...

Personally, I took my bad luck with ATi drivers as a result of the bad karma that they come packaged with. I should have never left nVidia, though now I'm happily back in thier arms :) There's really a lot to be said about a company that cares about writing good linux drivers.

Oh, and yeah, I can take you back up to suburban lanes.

I do like nVidia better (the last ATi card/chip I am happy with would be the.. 7000 series? The ones that work fine with the open-source radeon driver), but alas, the urge to get an AMD64 laptop kind of override wiser counsels.

And, yes, I'm stuck with a Broadcom wireless chip and suspend/resume does not work. Which is why that notebook is now my 'desktop' at home. At least the screen is more decent than the iBook for watching DVDs..

Catch you in the office, thanks!

Hrm... why do you think the City should put up a bus shelter? It's IU property on either side of the street, and an IU bus that you're waiting on. Perhaps your suggestion would be better aimed at University officials.

Bloomington Transit also uses the stop, I don't believe the pavement belongs to IU, and you are assuming I am waiting for an IU bus, which is incorrect (but beside the point).

The way things work in this country, it might be Bloomington Transit that I should ask, true.

I always figured we were supposed to use the almighty gates as a rain shelter. :p

Provided the rain falls vertically or from the sides of the gates and the gates are three times their current thickness, perhaps :)
